- Commissioned his own coffin to be made, 3 years before his death. He was said to be quite proud of the cherry wood coffin and frequently showed it off to visitors.
- Never wore a coonskin cap, only in historically inaccurate drawings does he wear one.
- During his travels he was known to carry books along with him, a favorite was Gulliver's Travels.
